John Swallow President - Carthage College John R. Swallow is the 24th president of Carthage College, a position he has held since 2017. A strategic, relational, and entrepreneurial leader, President Swallow has guided Carthage through significant growth, including record first-year enrollment and retention rates, expanded academic programs, and more than $80 million in investments in the campus and technology. He credits these achievements to the dedication of Carthage’s faculty, staff, and board and remains focused on expanding the college’s reach and impact. Prior to joining Carthage, President Swallow served as provost and later executive vice president and chief operating officer at the University of the South (Sewanee). He previously spent 17 years as a mathematics professor at Davidson College, where he was recognized for his teaching and scholarship. He holds a Ph.D. and two master’s degrees in mathematics from Yale University and has served on numerous boards
focused on higher education and economic development.
