The first Boy Scouts of America national jamboree was scheduled to be held in Washington, D.C., in 1935 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Scouting in America. Unfortunately, the jamboree was canceled because of a polio outbreak in Washington. When the first jamboree was finally held in 1937, Dan Beard lit the opening campfire using flint and steel. Scouts from all 48 states brought the wood that was used in the campfire. There were 27,232 Scouts camped on the National Mall under the Washington Monument. Since that time, an additional 18 national jamborees have been held, the last in 2017.

Youth Participant Information

You must be at least 12 years of age by the first day of the Jamboree but not reach your 18th birthday by the last day of the Jamboree. Scouts also need to have achieved First Class rank before leaving for the Jamboree.The Three Harbors Council’s Jamboree contingent will include 2 Scouts BSA Troops for boys and at least ¼ of a Scouts BSA Troop for girls. A Troop consists of 36 youth and 4 adult leaders. A ¼ Troop has 8 or 9 youth and 1 or 2 adult leaders.

Youth Participant Pricing and Registration

The fee for attending the National Jamboree with a Three Harbors Council contingent will be approximately $1,650. That includes the Jamboree, itself, and motor coach transportation with meals en route. (Whitewater rafting is optional for an additional charge.) Payments for the 2021 Jamboree will be made to Three Harbors Council on a specified schedule. A $200 deposit is required at time of registration. Payments are only refundable if someone from the waiting list takes your place.
 
How Do I Get Started?
Signing up to attend the National Jamboree is a two-part process.
  1. Apply online at the BSA Jamboree website: jamboree.scouting.org
  2. Reserve your spot in the contingent by completing the Three Harbors Council application form and submitting it with your $200 deposit to the Council Service Center in Milwaukee or Kenosha.
Payment Structure
The cost for each youth and adult member of the Three Harbors contingent to the 2021 National Jamboree is $1,650.00. Breakdown of fee:
  • National Jamboree Fee $1,175.00 (all costs at Jamboree site)
  • Transportation $275.00 (round trip by bus with meals and a half day of touring)
  • Training costs $75.00 (shakedown event, patches, T-shirts, caps)
  • Administration expense $100.00 (professional and office support, mailings)
  • Contingency $25.00

Council Contingent Leaders

It's not very often that you have a chance to be part of history. The Three Harbors Council’s Jamboree Committee is seeking male and female adult leaders for our contingent. A full Troop has 4 leaders, and a ¼ Troop will have 1 or 2. The cost will be approximately $1,650.
 
Responsibilities of Adult Leaders:
  • Attend Jamboree Committee meetings.
  • Participate in the assignment of Scouts to the contingent’s Troops in late 2020
  • Interview youth seeking unit leadership positions.
  • Facilitate unit meetings beginning in early 2021.
  • Participate in the contingent’s Shakedown event in 2021.
  • Development of emergency plans.
  • Coordination of Health forms for your contingent unit.

Scoutmaster Qualifications
  • Must have a current BSA membership in a local Council unit.
  • Scoutmasters and First Assistant Scoutmasters must be at least 21 years of age by the first day of the Jamboree.
  • Second Assistant Scoutmasters must be at least 18 years of age by the first day of the Jamboree.
  • Third Assistant Scoutmasters must be at least 18 years of age by the first day of the Jamboree but must not attain age 21 by the last day of the Jamboree.
  • Scoutmaster applicants must be currently serving as a primary unit leader.
  • First, Second and Third Assistant Scoutmasters must currently be serving in any unit leadership position.
  • Scoutmaster applicants must have completed appropriate leader-specific training.
  • Wood Badge training is preferred for all Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster positions.
  • All adult leaders must have and maintain current Youth Protection certifications.
  • Leaders must satisfy the Jamboree’s medical requirements.
  • All leaders must be approved by Three Harbors Council.
  • Leaders must pay all registration fees on a timely basis.

Planning Timeline

Winter/Spring/Summer 2020
  1. Accept youth applications—with $200 deposits.
  2. Recruit additional young men to fill two Troops (72 Scouts) and establish a waiting list.
  3. Recruit additional young women to fill at least ¼ Troop (8-9 Scouts) and establish a waiting list.
  4. Accept adult leadership applications.
  5. Committee makes adult leader appointments.
  6. Committee and adult leaders continue planning.
 
Fall 2020
  1. Full contingent meets for briefing.
  2. Youth participants express their preferences for unit assignments.
  3. Youth participants indicate their interests in unit leadership positions.
  4. Youth participants are assigned to units.
  5. Adult leaders interview and select youth leaders for their units.
  6. Scouts are assigned to Patrols.
 
Winter 2020-21
  1. Unit meetings begin.
  2. Patrols elect their Patrol Leaders.
 
Spring 2021
  1. Unit meetings continue.
  2. All contingent members participate in mandatory Shakedown event.
 
Summer 2021
  1. Final meetings for all contingent members and their parents.
  2. Contingent leaves by bus early on July 20 for Dayton, Ohio.
  3. Contingent leaves Dayton for the Summit early on July 21.
  4. National Jamboree for 9½ days (July 21 to July 30).
  5. Contingent returns late in the evening of July 30.
