Youth Protection Training

Youth Protection Training is Required
Scouting America requires Youth Protection training for all volunteers. The purpose of this policy is to increase awareness of the societal problem of child abuse and to create even greater barriers to abuse than already exist in Scouting.
  • Youth Protection training is required for all Scouting registered volunteers, regardless of their position.
  • New leaders are required to take Youth Protection training before submitting an application for registration. The certificate of completion for this training must be submitted at the time the application is made and before volunteer service with youth begins.
  • Youth Protection training must be taken every two years. If a volunteer's Youth Protection training record is not current at the time of recharter, the volunteer will not be re-registered.

Youth Protection Awareness for Scouts
The "three R's" of Youth Protection convey a simple message for the personal awareness of our youth members: Recognize that anyone could be a molester; Respond when someone is doing something that goes against your gut or against the safety guidelines; and Report attempted or actual molestation or any activity that you think is wrong to a parent or other trusted adult.
 
Scouting America has personal awareness programs geared toward young people in three age-specific courses.
 
Cub Scouts - It Happened to Me
  • This video should be used annually by Cub Scout packs or dens when Cub Scouts are accompanied by a parent or other adult family member
Scouts BSA - A Time to Tell
  • This video introduces the "three R's" of Youth Protection and should be viewed by troops annually.
Venturers - Personal Safety Awareness
  • This video is a presentation for any young person 14 through 20 years of age. It deals with the issues of acquaintance rape, Internet safety, peer sexual harassment, suicide and depression.
